Balancing emotions with Feng Shui...

Q. I constantly fret about money and the future, although my friends and family say I have no reason. How could I be more relaxed about my ability to earn money?
Ans. The metal chi energy of the west is associated with greater awareness of how to make money. To activate this, keep red flowers, coins on a red cloth in a metal pot or a mirror a mirror in this, keep red flowers, coins on a red cloth in a metal pot or a mirror in this area of your home. Decorating this direction of your home with red colours will also foster this beneficial energy.
The chi energy of the north can promote the feeling that money flows to you more easily. A crystal hung in a northern window, a metal wind chime over a northern door or growing ivy in the north of your home will therefore strengthen this chi energy and help your to achieve your aims.
The chi energy of the east is associated with self-confidence, and can help you to overcome any insecurity about earning money.

Q. My husband and are arguing a lot at home. Are there any Feng Shui recommendations that could help?
Ans. Bright colours, such as red, orange, purple and yellow, are particularly stimulating yang colours, and overexposure to these could encourage confrontational behaviour. To activate more yin energy, you should, therefore, decorate your home with pale greens, blues, creams and other pastel colours instead. Flowers, fabrics and decorative objects are all good ways to introduce these colours into your home.
To create more slow-moving yin chi energy, have furniture in your home that is made form yin materials, wood and wicker. Glass, metal, marble and stone are all yang materials that will speed up the flow of chi energy, so avoid having furniture and surfaces made form these materials.
To align yourself with a more peaceful chi energy that, after time, can subtly calm your own chi energy, sleep with the top of your head pointing west, south-west, north-west or north.
If your front door is positioned to the south of the centre of your home or faces south, this will encourage more fiery southern chi energy to enter your home, bringing with it tension and arguments. To subdue this chi, paint your door matt black, brown, pale yellow or beige.

Q. My partner and I both lead such hectic lives that we rarely see each other, let alone spend any quality time together. Can you recommend any Feng shui solutions to this?
Ans. To facilitate this aim, you need to create a relaxing yin ambience at home. You should also boost the chi energy of the south-west, which encourages you to be more settled and home-oriented, and the chi energy of the west, which helps you to feel more romantic and content.
A cosy atmosphere is more yin and this can be created by furnishing your home with large cushions and soft, comfy sofas and chairs. Keep clay pots or containers, natural fabrics and decorative objects made form soft stone in the south-west.
It will be easiest to spend quality time with your partner when both your nine ki year numbers are in the south-west, west, north or south-east.

Q. The television has become the focal point of our household. The children are obsessed with it and I am worried abut the negative effects it could have on our health. What would improve this situation?
Ans. To limit your exposure, watch only the programs in which you are interested and don’t leave the television on for background sound. Unplug it once you have finished viewing so that electricity is no longer powering its transformer. Health green plants add their own natural chi energy to television. Peace lilies, cacti and spider plants.

Q. Lately, I have been very irritable and find myself snapping at other people readily. I generally feel tense, especially when at home. How can Feng Shui make a difference?
Ans: Curved shapes, textured surfaces and mottled, wavy or irregular patterns will further slow the flow of chi energy, so try to incorporate these features into your home. Plants with rounded or floppy leaves have a calming effect, so grow lots of these in your hove as well, especially in front of any protruding corners or along long corridors.
To absorb more relaxing chi energy when you sleep, turn your bed so the top of your head is pointing south-west, west, north-west or north. You should also face one of these directions when you are sitting in the living or dining room.
Eating lots of fruit, salads and vegetables will boost your personal yin energy. Similarly, wearing soft. Flowing and pastel-coloured clothing will encourage you to feel more at peace.

Q. I have been under a lot of stress at work and am having trouble getting to sleep, and then staying asleep. I notice that when I stay at my girlfriend’s house I don’t have this problem. What can do to my bedroom to help me sleep better at my home?
Ans: Lots of large, leafy plants in your bedroom will calm the flow of energy at night and help you to fall asleep. To encourage a tranquil and intimate mood, keep the bedroom door and curtains closed at night. Mirrors speed up the flow of chi energy by bouncing it about a room, so if you have a mirror in your bedroom, remove it or cover it up at night. Synthetic fabrics carry a static charge of electricity that will adversely influences your chi energy and provoke an unsettled night’s sleep, so make sure that all bed clothes and linen are made form pure cotton or other natural fabrics.

Q. I recently moved to a new home and have been experiencing a lot of nightmares. I wondered if the two are related and, if so, what Feng Shui can do to help me?
Ans: To calm the flow of chi energy in the bedroom, keep a rubber plant or any other plant with rounded floppy leaves in the room, especially in front of any protruding corners or sharp objects that point towards your bed. Bright colours, such as red, orange and purple, speed up the flow of chi energy, so try to decorate your bedroom with softer colours instead. Pal greens and blues are particularly good for fostering relaxing chi energy.

Q. I tend to be a rather jealous person and am constantly preoccupied with whether my friends pay too much attention to other people. How can Feng Shui help me with this problem?
Ans: To subdue the chi energy of the south-west, centre and north-east, place small ramekin dishes filled with one or two tablespoons of sea salt in the south-west and north –east areas of your home. Sea salt is extremely yang and absorbs chi energy, which will help to stabilize the flow so soil chi energy. If there is a door, staircase, bathroom, toilet or kitchen in one of these directions, the potential for jealous feelings increases, so make sure you place the sea salt on the floor next to any doors, at the foot of any stairs or anywhere in one of these rooms. Placing metal pots, paper weights, clocks or any other heavy metal objects in the south-west, centre or north-east of your home will also help to calm the offending soil chi energy, as will decorating with white, grey and silver objects in these areas.

Q I often live in the past and dwell on previous negative experiences. Obviously this is affecting my everyday life and I would like to move on. How can Feng Shui help?
Ans: The chi energy of the north-east is helpful for clearing your head of the past, changing direction and motivating yourself to move ahead. To increase this energy in your home, decorate the north-east with white flowers, objects made of stone or white rocks.
Eastern chi energy increases your enthusiasm for focusing on the future. Wooden furniture and objects bring out this energy, so incorporate wood into your home wherever possible. Light-coloured wood is better than heavy, dark wood. To further enhance eastern chi energy, keep a bowl of fresh, clean water in the east of your home. Brilliant whites, greens, blues and purples also encourage your to move on, so have as many of these colours as possible in your home.

Q. I get very anxious about little things and this often prevents me from taking on new challenges. How can I change this behaviour and become more courageous?
Ans: As rooms in the north are unlikely to receive direct sunlight, there is a greater risk of chi stagnation. By keeping plants in these areas, you will encourage the flow of healthy chi energy. Ivy is a good option because it requires little light. If there is insufficient light, you may need to experiment with a daylight bulb to encourage the plant’s healthy growth.
Glass, marble, granite and stone are all yang materials, so have furniture and decorative objects made from these in your home. Follow a more yang diet, concentrating on fish, grains and root vegetables, and cut down on sweets, raw fruits, iced drinks, coffee, wine and sugary soft drinks, which are all comparatively yin. Martial arts and vigourous outdoor exercise will also help your to become more yang.

Q. I suffer from extreme mood swings. One moment I feel very happy and the next I could be plunged into a deep depression. Do you have any suggestions that would help make me feel more balanced?
Ans: When you are feeling depressed, you can adjust your own chi energy by spending more time in big, open spaces or in rooms with bright colours and hard surfaces. To adjust your chi energy so that you don’t feel overactive, try spending more time in comfortable, cosy places that have plenty of soft furnishings.
One way to crate greater stability in your life is to develop daily routines that you stick to. For example, try to eat your meals at exactly the same time each day and go to bed at the same time every night. By doing this, your body will build up a rhythm that will help to moderate any mood swings. To help bring a routine into your life, sleep with the top of your head pointing north-west, the direction associated with gaining greater stability and self-discipline. A metal pendulum clock placed in the north-west of your home will also encourage you to develop a routine.
